Presented by Archaeologist Dr. Kevin Rafferty, the Valley of Fire talk will feature:
- Results of general historical research conducted in the area
- Surveys and research conducted by the College of Southern Nevada from 2003–2014
- A discussion on settlement patterns and land use during each time period of the Valley of Fire’s prehistoric occupation
- Post-lecture Q&As with Dr. Rafferty
About Dr. Rafferty
Dr. Kevin Rafferty has more than 47 years of experience conducting archaeological research in the Southwest and Great Basin regions, notably in Valley of Fire State Park. He was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus following his career as full-time professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at the College of Southern Nevada (1989-2017), the last 12 years of which he served as chairman of the Department of Human Behavior. Dr. Rafferty is also the recipient of the College of Southern Nevada’s Excellence in Research award (2015) and the Nevada Archaeological Association’s Silver Trowel Award for Lifetime Achievement in Nevada Archaeology.
A seasoned and published archaeologist, he considers the crowning achievements of his life to be his marriage to his high school sweetheart, Rhonda, his three children, and his five grandsons.
